China discovers geothermal resources with temperatures exceeding 188 ℃
2024-11-06

The reporter learned from Sinopec today (November 6th) that China's first deep geothermal scientific exploration well with a depth of over 5000 meters, Fushen Re 1 well, has been officially completed. High temperature geothermal resources have been discovered in multiple strata, marking a breakthrough in China's exploration of deep geothermal resources in southern China.

Geothermal energy is a stable, reliable, green, low-carbon renewable energy source with characteristics such as large reserves, wide distribution, and clean environmental protection.
Fushen Re 1 well is located in Haikou City, Hainan Province, with a depth of 5200 meters, breaking the record for the deepest geothermal exploration well in China. Researchers have discovered high-temperature geothermal resources exceeding 188 ℃ in granite located over 4600 meters and 5100 meters underground, 250 million years ago. Through hydraulic fracturing operations, they have achieved rock fracturing, water injection, and heat extraction, forming a complete set of deep geothermal resource exploration, development, and utilization technologies.

Guo Xusheng, academician of the CAE Member: Through the study of this well, we believe that within 50 square kilometers around Haikou, there are about 1.4 billion tons of standard coal resources, which are very rich. By first generating electricity, then cooling, and finally producing domestic hot water, the cascade utilization of resources can be achieved, which is very meaningful for the green and low-carbon transformation of Hainan Island.
